Deere is becoming more of an infotech business. Does that change the way you manage it?
Most people don’t realize that one of our 8000 Series tractors has more computing power on it than the first space shuttle. We have reorganized so we can have a group that does what we’ve traditionally done well, which is the hardware and the embedded software that goes with it, and another group, where I’ve brought in people from places like Microsoft(MSFT, Fortune 500) to help us with the application side of this.

The key is connecting the parts of your car or motorcycle or aircraft or submarine or battlefield UAV in real-time. Now that is a real opportunity, connecting the entire ecosystem across the profit pool that was not connected before. Creating new analytics in real-time, that enables consumers get a greater insurance deal based on travel and driving patterns or service plans being reverse auctioned in real-time on the online engine by dealers in a 5 mile radius or insurance companies lowering the insurance on preventive maintenance for consumers or less parts being held in inventory because the system does all teh ABC, VED, FSN, SoS, et al analysis based on location and all this mapped as geospatial intelligence.
Imagine you can connect in real-time the parts of your car mapped to demand-supplychain analytic engine that connects the ecosystem from design to MRO to Insurance to POS? This is what I designed and built around 20 years ago, but over the years built the IP that is in the ability to drive;
1. Lower Cash Conversion Cycles
2. Lower Inventory holding
3. Higher Stock Turns
3. Higher Gross Margins per Stock Turn
Imagine the billions of dollars that can be saved. Imagine the appstore for developers creating apps around APIs connecting the entire auto industry profit-pool and all paid for from a percentage of every transaction as every app captures and adds value?
The M2M, IOT, etc. Now mobile marketplaces all connected to the location and all around the part-centric approach to the ecosystem. This is a business model and plan worth executing.
I learn this ever since I was around 5 or 6 from my father who was a supplychain expert and taught the fundamentals of ABC, VED, FSN, SoS, GOLF, et al and combine that with the billions of users of mobile users today, this is a force multiplier on a scale that is unfathomable with value to capture and unlock. From farmers on the field with their tractors to cargo ships at sea to every consumer in their car on the road to a battlefield commander. Imagine the mobile marketplace where the IP is in the ability to connect IoT as mobile marketplaces!
Anyone interested? The IP is in how to and execution.
